Built in 1828/1829 for publican William Broad, the ‘Foxhunter’s Retreat’ was one of the earliest land grants in Campbell Town. Initially it was constructed as a coaching inn when Bridge Street was the main street in town. After the construction of a new ‘Foxhunters Return’ on High Street, the building was then used as a school by two sisters who were instrumental in eradicating illiteracy in the district.
